Chorus is a combination of an interactive musical and a visual novel adventure game. The devs were inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer (episode Once More With Feeling), Dear Evan Hansen musical or the adventure game Life is Strange. The game is a debut work of the independent Australian studio Summerfall, which was founded in October 2018 by David Gaider (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age), Liam Esler (Pillars of Eternity, refreshed editions of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale) and Elie Young. The title was funded by a cmapaign on Fig.co. David Gaider is responsible for the script, while Troy Baker was the title's director. Plot The protagonist of the story is a woman named Grace, whose voice is provided by Laura Bailey (Spider-Man, Gears 5). In her apartment she finds an injured female vocalist; just before her death, the woman reveals that she is a muse and passes on her musical abilities to Grace. This is how an urban fantasy story begins, full of dangers, conspiracies mythical gods and creatures lurking at every step. The player must clear himself of the charges and escape the punishment of a secret society called the Choir. The action of the game takes place in the modern-day world full of elements taken from Greek mythology. During our adventure we visit the conference room of the New Olympus, the Underworld night club or the misty halls of the Reliquary, where a Minotaur resides. Not only does Chorus have a musical character and emphasizes mythical accents, it is also full of mysteries and wonders. Strange and twisted characters, whom the screenwriter approached very comprehensively, help create a unique atmosphere. Despite the quite serious tone, the game is also full of witty dialogues, and we can even romance selected NPCs. Mechanics Chorus is a narrative game, so the gameplay is mainly based on dialogues. However, unlike in typical visual novel games, the special abilities acquired from the deceased muse can be used in conversations with NPCs to manipulate them (e.g. to encourage them to reveal their lies) and obtain useful information. It is thanks to music that we give the conversations the right tone. However, the approach to it is dependent on the player and is based on three pillars corresponding to the following characteristics: charm, cleverness and kickass. The choice of dialogue lines resembles latest works of BioWare and although it is important because it affects the lyrics of the songs, as well as the course of the game itself, it is not necessary to be successful in the conversation. You have to skillfully adapt to the character. Technical issues Visuals consists of illustrated graphics. Throughout the game we observe mainly static backgrounds, and animations during the dialogue scenes have been reduced to a minimum. As we are dealing with a musical, a lot of emphasis has been put on the music layers. Austin Wintory, an American composer who has been nominated for Grammy Award for Journey, is responsible for it.
